I love the way Thoreau saw the world. Some of the ways he describes the world can be depressing, especially when they ring true. One of the more famous things he wrote was:

"The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation. What is called resignation is confirmed desperation..."

He doesn't think things have to be this way, though:

"If one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet with a success unexpected in common hours."
